Don’t Ignore The Inside Threat – BS7858 Screening

It’s a nightmare to think that an employee might sabotage your organization’s assets, steal things of value, or even conduct an attack. Yet the UK’s Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure warns of increasing evidence that organisations are vulnerable to malicious “insiders”. You can take control of the risk by using BS 7858:2019 Screening of individuals working in a secure environment – Code of practice.
  • This document supplies a robust screening process for prospective applicants – giving employers peace of mind that staff have been checked as far as possible.
  • It applies to all individuals in relevant employment, including full-time and part-time employees, those who are temporary and permanent, and to all levels of seniority, including directors.
  • It’s used in both the security sector, and in all other sectors, wherever employees have access to critical infrastructure sites or sensitive information.
Organizations should act to make sure they don’t employ individuals whose career or history renders them unsuitable for the role.    As part of our recruitment and screening processes Stance Security carry out these checks on all of our staff team to ensure as far as reasonably practically the credability of all staff members working in our employ. Why do we do this? Well there are several reasons why we carry out these checks, firstly it should be basic and standard good practice. ensuring that all staff are fit for their role whether that is guarding a building site or look after vunerable individuals. Another reason would be that the required checks for an individual to obtain an SIA licence are basic at best. The checks consist of things such as a basic DBS check, right to work in the UK and confirmation that entry level training has been completed. The only problem with the process is that it has been known for people to slip through the “net,” in our experience there have been a number of imdividuals which do not have right to work in the UK or it has expired, people with SIA licences applying for roles with DBS checks with an exstensive number of convictions. At Stance Security this screening process is carried out by our own team and not an outsourced process. Following completion of each individual is reviewed and signed off by a company director.   Anthoer reason to consider is that it is not standard within a security companies insurance policy that all staff are screened to BS 7858. This means that if this is not completed then the companies insurance company may decide that their insurance is not valid, in the event of the require of an insurance claim this may mean that an individual may bring a civil action claim against yourself directly even if the event is not directly related to the security team.
